    Big snakes

Be careful out there.  Seems like we've had a bumper crop of snakes this year.  The abandon skin in the image below was at least 6 feet long.  I found a large piece of skin in almost the same place about a month ago.   You can judge the size by comparing it to the brown bottle at the top of the screen.

I couldn't tell what the pattern should have been.  I stayed on the tractor just in case the owner was still around and in a grumpy mood.  It is living between the tank (pond)  and the old barn.   Looks like he is living pretty well.

    Re: Big snakes

I hear ya' on the bumper crop of snakes.  I've killed more cottonmouths in the last 2 weeks than I've seen in the last five years.

Try to be selective about the snakes you do kill.  Many of them (blue indigos, king snakes for starters) kill rattlers and other snakes.

    Tracey,

I'm with you. I show no mercy on a rattler or copperhead or cotton mouth but the rest may go in peace. Prairie Racers and Bull Snakes are also snake eaters. I just can't make myself walk away from a rattler though. We grilled one at the fire station one time and it was not very good!! Fried isn't bad but then again if you get enough batter on it, even cardboard is good fried with some gravy and biscuits!!!

Jesse, I need you to dry ice me down some gator tail and send me. I've always wanted to try that too. I'll do something nice for you someday in return, hehe.

    Re: Big snakes

And I thought there were only two types of snakes.... Alive one and a Dead one!

I've seen a couple of snakes this year but I've not seen any rattlesnakes so far.  Now that I've said that I'll probably see one.

    Re: Big snakes

Lots of people think I'm crazy, but I try to leave the Copperheads.  Unless they show aggression, I leave them alone.  They are great for killing the 'possum sized rats running around our hay.

I visited the snake house at Texas A&M University - Kingsville and learned that snakes are like people - some are flat out mean and aggressive and some just want to be left alone.  They run the gambit.  And that is all in the same species. However, I've never seen a non-aggressive cottonmouth.

I remember trying to get a Copperhead away from where I was working.  I picked him up with a stick and flipped him into the brush several yards away.  Son of a gun came back.  I flipped him over to the brush 3 more times and he came back 3 more times.  Then I got the machette off the tractor.  Like in Tombstone - Doc Holiday says "Ringo only wants revenge."  Wyatt Earp says, "revenge for what?"  "For being born."  Some creatures were born to die.

    Re: Big snakes

We had Harlan Winters out here last year doing a desnaking clinic and he advised for many years, rattlers would make a sound before they strike, in the past 5-7 years, he advised that the rattlers are quiet now and very rarely make a noise before striking.

I think we should talk to the Rattlesnake Union and tell them that is not fair.  I think they should have to make a noise before striking me. Ha.

    Re: Big snakes

I killed a 5' rattler about a month ago and he never made a sound.  I walked within 2 feet of him twice before I saw he was there. He just sat there coiled and quiet.  Luckily he never struck at me.

    Re: Big snakes

Sunday afternoon I had cleaned out the debris from Ladybug's dog house.  Some time later I turned the dogs out of the my house to run and play.   Ladybug went to the door of her house, stopped short and started barking.  I knew something had gotten in it.  Thinking that it might be a possum or something, I looked in.  There was a nice size cottonmouth, just enjoying a nap--or whatever.  Ladybug was mad that the thing got into her space.  The horse must have smelled it because he was stomping and shorting and running up and down the fence line.  He was not a happy camper either.   Anywho-- Warren dispatched it.  I just don't like those things near our house(s).
