    Need Sympathy

I got some bad news from the vet today.  Bowie started limping on his right rear leg and it appears he has somehow torn a  ligament that holds his kneecap in place.  The vet says he needs surgery and may have to be kept quiet for as long as 8 weeks.  How do you keep a Lacy quiet for 8 weeks?  I am just sick to my stomach. He is such a great little guy he really doesn't deserve this.

    Re: Need Sympathy

Unfortunately, they go at life so hard they seem to just do this stuff!

I can tell you it was no fun trying to keep Jones "quiet" for one week when he messed up his shoulder a few months back. You just have to crate him, and then only let him out for short breaks, and only on a leash.

You better find some toys that he really likes, and hopefully the vet will give you something to help keep him calm... Jones ate the meds the first time, then decided to spit them out after that. I had to put them on the back of his tongue, grab his muzzle, hold his mouth tightly closed, tilt his head back, and stroke his throat until he swallowed, every time, or NADA!

Much sympathy for you and Bowie! And, no fireworks!

    Re: Need Sympathy

I am sorry Bowie has such a bad injury that surgery is required, but I sure do hope a speedy and full recovery for Bowie.  Good luck with keeping such an active dog calm for that long.  I feel for both of you.

Let us know how things progress, please

    Re: Need Sympathy

I'm so sorry for both you and Bowie, but with a little creativity (and a lot of patience!) you'll get through it. And you can rely on your friends here for support and sympathy, and you'll even find a good story or two from others who have survived similar situations–chime in here anytime, Jimbo!      ---dena

    Re: Need Sympathy

Oh, poor Bowie and you!!  I can't imagine keeping one down except as suggested...lots of great chew toys.  Keep him on a short leash cause they can build up speed in a hurry.  They are tough buggers...just ask Jimbo. Rattlesnake Rose is a wonder dog.

    Good luck...

Poor Bowie, It's gonna be a tough 2 months for him. I went through this with a black & tan gyp once and its no fun. If the vet does his job Bowie will be back on the go as good as ever though.

Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts.  I scheduled surgery for next week so keep your fingers crossed.  I just hope for full recovery.

    Re: Need Sympathy

    Bob,

Here's a heart felt tub of sympathy for you. Sorry Y'all are going through this. I've been down that road and it's a rough ride. My Rattlesnake Rose spent a bunch od weeks under close confinement when she was just a pup. I had to keep her crated and only out to eat and bathroom breaks. Then even when she had to go outside I had to carry her outside and carry her back in for a good long time. It'll be rough on the whole family to keep the close confinement. BUT, it seemed to me that it didn't take long to get into a routine to where she knew what we were going to do and how it would go and she cooperated really well after we got the pattern set. I did worry that not getting to go out and excercise like she needed to would hurt her muscular development. It didn't!! hehe. She is toned muscle and fast as lightening just about. Bottom line I would have to say is just get your mind set on how it will be better in the long run and stay after it. The temptation is great to just unleash and let them play.... hold fast to the goal and take it a day at a time. You will all be glad you did. I know I sure am.

Best of luck to you and yours and I mean that from my heart.
