NNNOOOO cabbage palms lol. Most of it looks like where it ended, but we were in some pretty nasty briers for awhile. That's why he is off lead. Those briers slide right up that rope, but stop abruptly at my arms.lol

He trailed the first half on lead. Michelle filmed that from behind me, that is all you can see though is behind me. I've got another short video but you can only see pieces of him through the briers.lol

You're a better man than me, out there in the heat! Don't yall worry about snakes at this time of year?

    Re: Trailing video

    Clifford,

I've killed three huge Diamondback rattlers on my property in the 16 yrs that I've been there.  The last one was at my back deck steps..12 rattles.  Scared the crap out of me.  But that's a whole story in itself.  Another one was by my well pump and another not too far from that.   Rat snakes are practically an everyweek event...caught one in the chicken pen this past Sunday.  He's now vacationing across the river.  I've never had mocassins since I'm not near any swamps or low land; and I've never ever seen a copper head; don't think there are many of them down here.  I really watch for rattlers in early spring and late fall when they seem to be moving more.

I went blackberry picking the other day and I did not take the dogs because of the high risk of rattlers in the briars.  And quite honestly, when my labs went with me trail riding I didn't worry about it too much.  For some reason I worry more about the Lacys even though I think they spot snakes quicker and are very agile.  I'm just attached more to them I suppose?

    Re: Trailing video

We don't have many rattlesnakes.  Our most common poisonous snake is a copperhead.  Cottonmouths are our most venomous snake typically, but to be honest you just don't see that many.  I know they are there, but in all my life of coon hunting in the swamps I've only killed two and never had a dog bit.  As for the weather, it was a little overcast and early in the morning.  I've been picking the cooler days and some at night.

    Re: Trailing video

So, your tree huggging doesn't extend to Rattlesnakes? Hmmm!

I went berry picking in PA once, and the whole bush moved... The bear that was on the other side was almost as surprised as I was! That would have been a fun day to have the Lacys along..... Cristi is totally aganst me turning them out on Hogs, but I would love to take them up to Virginia and run them with my friend's bear hounds... I am afraid that they might decide to open on track though, so it may never happen....

    Re: Trailing video

    Clifford,

My tree hugging does not apply to alot of things..but does most definitely to fox squirrels, otter and bobcat.  My dad hunted deer for meat only; I hunted deer, coon and squirrel when younger.  I'd still love to coon hunt and squirrel hunt if I could find someone to go with; something about the challenge of actually getting one.  Squirrels are hard to hit with a 22.  My husband would hate it though..he's not into killing anything.  He can't stand it when I'm shooting at squirrels at our house!!  And he wasn't at the house when i got the coon, thank goodness.  And I definitely don't get the trophy hunting or big game hunters.  But this is way off topic.

    Re: Trailing video

Good video Scott.  How old is Flint  and how long have you been training on blood?

I had Bella out last weekend and she had some trouble with the track due to the heat.  Dang cable guy kept running his mouth so I couldn't get out of the house until it got hot.

I think it is said that we have every poisonous snake in the country in these parts, but I don't see that many.  When I used to run deer dogs we would have at least one dog bit every time out, we carried antibiotics and vitamin shots in a cooler for those cases.

Rebecca I would be happy to shoot some rats with fancy coats if you need a partner--oh my wife loves most animals and feeds 8+ coons in our front yard every night.

    Re: Trailing video

Thanks Stan, he just turned a year old. I started them at about 12 weeks, believe it or not I used to call him my little retard.lol. He is some kind of dog, and lives to make me happy I think. I've slowed way down since summer got here, I go at first light before it gets hot. Bow season starts mid Sept. and it is often in the high 80's or low 90's here. You guys get started the end of Aug right.

You are a Lacy owner now that coon feeding will soon cease.lol

Rebecca I used to be a tree hugger too till they come out with hand climbers & 2 piece stands.Wink

    Re: Trailing video

That was by the book!!!!!  Great training and practice you are putting on the dog!Yes

You are doing your job in helping him become a great tracker.  I am so glad you shared for others to see.  This is how it is done!

For others reading, look how in this training session he didn't get a head of the dog or push him in one direction or another, but stayed back and praised, letting the dog work it out.  Again, Yes

You both will be an awesome team!

    Re: Trailing video

Scott I know what you mean because my wife frequently puts the fingers to her forehead shaping the letter L for Bella as well, because of some of the goofy stuff she does.  Depending on the day I will try to train in the evening or morning on weekends.  Yes our all out season starts August 15th and it will be near triple digits.

The coons are safe in the front yard but would be in trouble should they venture to the back as they have previously discovered with the "friendly" encounters with the bulldog.

    Re: Trailing video

Thanks everyone for the compliments, I don't know of anything that makes me happier than to watch my dogs work and succeed.

Donna that track only aged about 14 hours, just worked out that way this time. I mix it randomly now so it's different every time. I'm gonna try stretching it over the 40 hr mark when it gets cooler.

I learned a long time ago Stan, the pup that starts the quickest is not always the best.
