    Lila's 1st squirrel

Today was the day in spite of the high wind.  Amos & Lila working together found this little sucker.  .22 sealed the deal.

Lucky duckies! It was still wet and nasty here...I set out a squirrel trap but the mechanism got clogged with mud.  Congratulations!

I'd pulled out my trap as well but this turned out perfectly.  I usually can't see them once they are up in the tree.  This fellow wasn't so lucky.  Now I understand why squirrel hunters use spotting glasses.  Looking through a little scope is tedious.

One more and you'd have a meal!  Did you have a hard time getting it away from your pup?

Heck yeah..Amos wanted it real bad but he brings it and gives it to me.. Lila took off with it.  Had to chase her butt down..I chopped off it's tail and gave that to her as the prize.

    Re: Lila's 1st squirrel

I trapped a squirrel today for Pearl to chase and while I was trying to drive it out of the cage Pearl darted in the cage and killed it!  I was worried that it would bite her but she has no wounds.  Anyway after she played with it and rolled on it and pounced on it for a while, she started to eat it so I was able to drive her into the sun room and get it away from her.  I tried getting her to bring it to me...nope.  She actually bristled up a bit when I was trying to get it.

How do you get your dog to bring you the squirrel, or at least leave it alone so you can get it before it is all chomped on and slobbery?  Will that come with age and experience?  I hope my hunting doesn't end up with me shooting one squirrel and Pearl taking off with it, end of hunting for the day. :(  Think I will put a long rope on her and let her drag it around so she is easier to catch.

    Rebecca:

    I bet Lila was excited.

I kept one of the male puppies to start and see how he would turn out.  He is a bad little boy.  He like Lila is fearless in his pursuit of ANYTHING.  Wild as a March Hare.  He should turn out good by the time he is 6 or 7 months old.  We have named him Nock.  James tells him,"Come here before I nock your head off". "LOL"  He has a great nose.  After he is well on his way in his training I will make him available to someone who has the knowledge to finish him out.

    Re: Lila's 1st squirrel

Killed another one today.  Usually Amos will bring them to me but today, I think because Lila wanted it real bad, he just chomped it and stood there.  I went over grabbed the squirrel and then decided to let them have it.  This may not have been the right thing to do but I figured it might really bring out the lust for squirrel or a bad case of the squirts.  Amos ended up eating the front end of the squirrel and it got passed back and forth all over the yard.  The game ended when much to my dismay Lila came running through the house into my son's room with the ass end of squirrel with the guts dragging.  Ugh..So I just through it over the fence.

Amos fetches anything you throw so it isn't hard for him to bring the squirrel back.  But you'll have to get the advice of a pro for fetching a squirrel.

Cynthia, I love the name Nock.  You and James come up with some good names.

    Re: Lila's 1st squirrel

I love reading the stories about Lila and Amos!  LOL!  Pearl fetches, just not squirrels.  Those she keeps.

We went to my Dad's farm in Alabama this weekend.  We had a great time, rode dirtbikes and I took Pearl on a squirrel hunt.  No squirrels to be seen!  But she is good to go with .22's being shot.  I am holding off on trying out the 12 gauge until we have excitement and squirrels falling out of trees.
